Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Santa Clarita Owner’s Guide
Schluter kitchen remodeling in Santa Clarita typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on cabinet footprint, countertop material, and how much waterproofing work the existing Schluter systems need. Most owners discover they need this work after spotting a failed Schluter edge trim profile (the metal strip that seals where tile meets the floor), cracked grout at the KERDI-BOARD seam, or a DITRA-HEAT thermostat that stopped communicating with the floor sensor. We stock the common Schluter profiles, KERDI membrane, and DITRA matting on our trucks, so a repair call usually doesn’t need a second visit.

Schluter makes the waterproofing backbone of a lot of Santa Clarita kitchens, especially in homes built or renovated since 2010. When the system fails, it fails at the seams. The good news: most breakdowns are isolated and repairable without tearing out the whole kitchen. The bad news if you ignore it: water gets behind the tile, and then you’re pricing a full gut instead of a targeted fix. Luca Romano and our crew have rebuilt enough Schluter kitchens in Valencia and around Old Town Newhall to know exactly where these systems give up first.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

We work with the full Schluter kitchen lineup: KERDI-BOARD wall panels, KERDI waterproofing membrane, DITRA and DITRA-HEAT uncoupling mats, and the Schluter edge trim and transition profiles (RONDEK, QUADEC, DECO, and SCHIENE). The compatibility gotcha most people hit: not every Schluter profile fits every tile thickness. A RONDEK profile sized for 3/8-inch tile will sit proud or recessed against 1/2-inch porcelain, and that’s a visible failure you’ll notice every time you walk past.
OEM Schluter parts are our default recommendation for anything that touches water. Aftermarket equivalents exist for some trim profiles, but the anodized aluminum finish on OEM Schluter profiles wears noticeably better against Santa Clarita’s hard water than the cheaper powder-coated copies. For KERDI membrane and DITRA matting, there is no aftermarket substitute we’ll install. The membrane chemistry is proprietary, and a knockoff membrane against a real Schluter drain assembly voids the system warranty.
To identify your exact part: the profile name is stamped on the back of the aluminum. The membrane and matting have the Schluter name printed in a repeating pattern. If you’re not sure what you have, a photo sent to us during the estimate call usually settles it. Sawyer Remodel Santa Clarita is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Schluter, which means we answer to you, not a manufacturer’s sales quota.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking along the counter-to-backsplash joint. Schluter systems don’t flex; the house does. Santa Clarita’s temperature swings cause enough subtle movement that a rigid grout line at a Schluter transition will crack if the original installer skipped the flexible sealant.
- Edge trim pulling away from the tile. This usually means the thin-set under the profile anchor leg lost bond. It’s a telltale sign the original thin-set was mixed too dry, or the profile was set after the mortar skinned over.
- Water staining on the cabinet face below the sink. KERDI membrane fails at the seam when it wasn’t overlapped by the required 2 inches. Water finds that seam and follows it down into the cabinet. You’ll see a dark line or swollen MDF before you see a leak.
- DITRA-HEAT thermostat showing an error code or the floor not heating evenly. The sensor wire usually fails first. Santa Clarita’s alkaline soil isn’t the issue here; it’s simple wire fatigue or a sensor that got pinched during install and finally gave up.
- Hollow-sounding tile near the sink or dishwasher. This means the tile has debonded from the KERDI layer. Water got through a compromised spot, the thin-set re-emulsified, and now the tile is floating. It won’t fix itself.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a full Schluter kitchen remodel in Santa Clarita, expect $14,000 to $45,000. A smaller galley kitchen with stock cabinets starts around $14,000. A larger kitchen with an island, custom cabinets, Cambria or Silestone countertops, and full Schluter waterproofing behind the backsplash runs toward the $45,000 end. For scope-specific work, countertop installation alone runs $2,000 to $6,500, backsplash runs $800 to $2,500, and a kitchen island runs $3,000 to $10,000.
Every written estimate from us includes the parts, the labor to install them, and the disposal of the old material. You get the price before we start, and the invoice matches the number you approved. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right within a year of project close. That’s in writing, not something you have to negotiate for.

What drives the cost: linear feet of KERDI-BOARD, whether we’re replacing DITRA-HEAT cable or just the membrane, the profile finish (brushed aluminum is standard; stainless is an upcharge), and how much demolition the old tile puts up.
DIY or Call Us?
An owner can safely check whether the thermostat is getting power, whether the breaker tripped, and whether a profile is loose. You can also photograph the failure so we know what we’re walking into. What you shouldn’t do is peel back KERDI membrane to “see how bad it is” or pull a loose profile off the tile. Once the membrane is torn, the water path widens. Once a profile is yanked, the tile edge it was protecting becomes a chipped, jagged liability.
There’s also the electrical side of DITRA-HEAT. The heating cable runs on line voltage. Opening the thermostat, testing the sensor, or splicing the cable is not a weekend project. That’s how you get a dead short in the floor or a shock off the wall plate. We’d rather have you call us at (661) 592-1977 before things get that far.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter waterproofing system in a Santa Clarita kitchen lasts 20 to 30 years before the membrane or profiles need meaningful attention. The failure points that shorten that are installer error at the seams and hard-water damage to the aluminum trim. Call (661) 592-1977 if you’re seeing cracking or staining, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a repair or a replacement.
Yes, in most cases a single failed profile, a loose tile, or a thermostat issue is a targeted repair, not a full remodel. The exception is water that has been getting behind the membrane for months. By the time the cabinet is swollen, you’re usually into a larger teardown. Call (661) 592-1977 for an honest assessment and a free estimate.
A single profile replacement or thermostat swap is a same-day job. A backsplash re-waterproofing with new KERDI and tile runs two to three days. A full kitchen remodel with Schluter systems runs three to six weeks depending on cabinet lead time and countertop fabrication. Call (661) 592-1977 and we’ll give you a written timeline for your specific job.
We stock the common Schluter profiles, KERDI membrane, KERDI-BOARD, and DITRA matting on our trucks. Specialty profiles and DITRA-HEAT cable lengths are ordered through our local Santa Clarita supplier and arrive in one to three days. You never have to source parts yourself. Call (661) 592-1977 to schedule your free estimate.
If your Schluter kitchen system is showing its age or failing outright, don’t wait for a small crack to become a cabinet replacement. Call Sawyer Remodel Santa Clarita at (661) 592-1977 and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts. The work tells the story. We just show up and do it right.
